The dissemination activities ie the publications and the lectures at several congresses have contributed to an increased awareness of the need to carefully deal with chemicals which have estrogenic effects. This has resulted in research projects on the detection of the possible endocrine disrupting character of certain emissions and products of pharmaceutical companies. Furthermore, at the Flemish governmental level, there were the invitations to attend to a hearing on the subject (2001) and to write reviews for the MIRA-S and MIRA-T reports (background documents for the Environment and Nature reports of the Flemish Government). With regard to the development of in vitro assays and their applicability for environmental monitoring, there was the demand by the Flemish Environmental Agency (VMM) for the formulation of recommendations towards the use in Flanders of in vitro test systems for the screening of different environmental water matrices.

Furthermore, in the field of water re-use and recycling, the notion that operating water in short cycles should be framed in a HACCP context has been clearly received and several projects on water re-use in Europe are currently carefully examining the ED aspects. The potential positive aspects of probiotic bacteria and their fermentative matrix has attracted the attention of a number of industries. Currently one of these is engaged in a continuation of the research topic ie the use of fermented soy products to equilibrate the estrogenic balance in the gastro-intestinal tract.
